CHAMPIONS TENNIS AT ROYAL ALBERT HALL PARTNERS WITH SPORTSAID
LONDON (May 5, 2016) – IMG today announced that SportsAid, an organization set up to help aspiring British athletes reach their goals through financial support, has signed on as the official charity partner of Champions Tennis at Royal Albert Hall, taking place in London 30 November – 4 December, 2016. This year’s edition will yet again feature a legend of the sport, 7-time Grand Slam Champion John McEnroe, who headlined the inaugural event in London in 1997. McEnroe will return to London to help celebrate Champions Tennis’ 20th anniversary, joining Australian legend and two-time US Open Champion Pat Rafter, who will be making his fourth appearance.
‘’Champions Tennis is delighted to be partnering with SportsAid, an organization that for years has been supporting young British athletes with their quest to become the next generation of champions. We are honoured that SportsAid chose to work with the Champions Tennis Tour as part of its 40th anniversary initiative and will help them carry out their mission,’’ said Jan Felgate, Chairman of the ATP Champions Tour.
Celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, SportsAid is the only national charity of its kind – helping young British sportsmen and women who aspire to be the nation’s next Olympic, Paralympic, Commonwealth or world champions. The charity’s Patron is Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge. Since 2013, she has spent time with young athletes supported by SportsAid and previous beneficiaries of the charity’s help, at fundraising events, training days and performance workshops. SportsAid has supported tens of thousands of athletes during the critical early stages of their careers over the last four decades, including Sir Steve Redgrave, Sir Chris Hoy, Sir Ben Ainslie, Jessica Ennis-Hill, Dame Kelly Holmes, Sir Bradley Wiggins, Mo Farah and Seb Coe. Almost two-thirds of the British teams at London 2012 were former – and in a few cases current – recipients of SportsAid’s support, winning 20 Olympic and 27 Paralympic gold medals between them. At the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games more than 450 of the athletes competing were previously supported by SportsAid, with 241 of them winning medals.
Tim Lawler, Chief Executive of SportsAid, said: “SportsAid is honoured to be the official charity partner of Champions Tennis for 2016. Over the last 20 years, Champions Tennis has secured a special place in the British sporting calendar. This partnership provides us with a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the end of our 40th anniversary year, and acts as the perfect platform for the next chapter in SportsAid’s story.”
SportsAid will host a charity session on the afternoon of Friday, 2nd December 2016, which will include:
- a private audience with Olympians and Paralympians, SportsAid’s future heroes and Champions Tennis players
- a silent auction
- a parade of Olympians and Paralympians over the last 40 years, including British athletes who will be participating in the 2016 Olympics and Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro
- live competitions with a chance to win prizes and meet and greet British Olympians
Champions Tennis at the Royal Albert Hall, the season-finale to the ATP Champions Tour, is played over five days with a day and evening session. The 2016 edition will mark the 20th anniversary of the event which over the years has featured tennis’s greatest stars, including Pete Sampras, Tim Henman, Goran Ivanisevic, Bjorn Borg, Andy Roddick, and James Blake. Additional participants of the event will be announced in due course.
