Exciting Line-up for SportsAid Charity Session - Champions Tennis

London, (2nd November): This year Champions Tennis at Royal Albert Hall, is partnering with SportsAid as the official charity of the event. SportsAid is the only national charity of its kind, aimed at helping aspiring athletes reach their goals through financial support and recognition. This year marks SportsAid’s 40th anniversary. To celebrate this milestone, they will host a charity session on the afternoon of Friday 2nd December.

The SportsAid session will feature the ‘Fast4’ format with two teams, each captained by former Olympians Mark Foster and Denise Lewis. ‘Team Foster’ will comprise of former World No. 1 and two-time US Open champion Pat Rafter, former British No. 1 Tim Henman as well as crowd favourite Henri Leconte, and Younes El Aynoui.Team Lewis’ will include 7-time Grand Slam champion John McEnroe, former British No. 1 Greg Rusedski, former doubles Grand Slam champion Xavier Malisse, and the jester of the court Mansour Bahrami.  Contrary to the six games required in regular tennis, the ‘Fast4’ format sets are determined on a first-to-four-games basis. At three games-all a tiebreak is played to five points, where a deciding point will be played at four points-all. There are no advantage points and if the ball strikes the net cord and lands within the service lines, play continues. This format encourages players to add variety to their game and keeps opponents on their toes for the whole match, ensuring exciting viewing!

The charity session will also consist of a spectacular performance from SportsAid ambassador and English soprano Laura Wright, and to conclude the afternoon, a parade of British Olympians and Paralympians of past, present and future, including some who participated in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.

SportsAid are a highly dedicated organisation and have supported tens of thousands of athletes during the critical early stages of their careers over the last four decades. More than 400 athletes received SportsAid funding at Rio de Janeiro, across 43 different disciplines. These Games marked 10 full Olympic and Paralympic cycles since the charity’s establishment in 1976. Some notable alumni include Sir Ben Ainslie,Lord Seb Coe,Mo Farah,Jessica Ennis-Hill, Dame Kelly Holmes, Sir Chris Hoy, Sir Steve Redgrave and Sir Bradley Wiggins. The charity’s Patron is Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge who has been especially active in her support for the charity, spending time with young athletes supported by SportsAid at fundraising events, training days and performance workshops.

In its 20-year history, Champions Tennis at the Royal Albert Hall has featured many of tennis’ greatest stars, including Boris Becker, Bjorn Borg, Stefan Edberg, Goran Ivanisevic, John McEnroe, Andy Roddick and Pete Sampras, and special appearances from Novak Djokovic, Sir Elton John, Billie-Jean King, Andy Murray, HRH Duke of Cambridge and many more.
