Marat Safin makes his Champions Tennis debut - Champions Tennis

Former World No.1 Marat Safin is set to play Champions Tennis at the Royal Albert Hall, taking place from Thursday 30th November – Sunday 3rd December 2017. He joins two-time US Open winner Pat Rafter, British fan favourite Tim Henman and French Open winner Juan Carlos Ferrero, with additional players to be announced in due course.

Marat Safin began his professional career in 1997 and rose to fame when he won his first Grand Slam title at the US Open in 2000, defeating Pete Sampras in the final. Following this he held the World No. 1 singles ranking, claimed the 2005 Australian Open title overcoming Lleyton Hewitt and led Russia to victory in the 2002 and 2006 Davis Cups. Another career highlight includes Safin’s Wimbledon performance in 2008. He was the first Russian man to reach the semi-finals beating World No. 3 Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals, before going on to play defending champion Roger Federer. In 2016 Safin also became the first Russian tennis player to be introduced into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

Safin commented “I am delighted to be joining the 2017 Champions Tennis line up for the first time. The Royal Albert Hall is such a spectacular entertainment venue and I’m looking forward to taking on my fellow tennis legends who I’ve had the pleasure of playing against in my professional career.”
